Auction house Piasa inaugrates its new Parisian HQ with a sale of designer Peder Moos’ unknown works

Leading French art and design auction house Piasa has a brand new home in Paris. The current move aims at uniting its offices, showroom and gallery under one roof, in a 1,000 sq m space on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in the heart of the city's art market (Artcurial, Christie's and Sotheby's all are within walking distance). It marks an important moment for the gallery, which has relocated to a space well-known to art collectors - the former headquarters of the legendary Galerie Didier Aaron.
To inaugurate the new gallery, which was unveiled during the recent Biennale Des Antiquaires, Piasa is holding a sale of American and Scandinavian design alongside a highly-anticipated auction of Peder Moos' unknown works. The Danish designer's wood works (on show until the sale, today) are extremely rare and previously unseen renditions of his craft.
What the gallery's head of design Cédric Morisset has billed as a 'revolutionary discovery' (see W* 187) is a collection of 60 pieces handcrafted by Moos, ranging from chairs and tables to smaller objects like tools, bullet-shaped pocket lamps and albums covered in wood veneer. The collection is rounded out by earlier pieces made of pine - the only type of wood the designer had access to during the wartime - and later objects in exotic woods.
Minimal forms and clever design tricks are at the core of Moos' production, and this catalogue is an encyclopedic overview of the designer and his small but graciously formed collection.
