Glass and wood dominate in Design Hotels’ elegant Budapest outpost, a contemporary space in a neighbourhood dominated by 19th-century architecture. The lobby’s transparent floor reveals Roman ruins below, while the hotel’s innovative façade is illuminated in changing colours. Architects Radius B+S have mixed chairs by Alvar Aalto, Ron Arad, Ross Lovegrove and Philippe Starck with custom-designed furnishings. In the rooms, artwork by local students loosely interprets fairytales. The location, just downstream of the Chain Bridge, makes for views of Buda Castle and the Pest riverbank, best seen from the terraces of the top-floor Panorama suites.
