It’s no easy job classifying Martino Gamper – part artist, part designer, part recycler of what many would consider unwanted wooden trash. We came up with ‘alchemist’ in our February awards issue (W*107), only instead of metal to gold Gamper’s expertise lies in fashioning old bits of furniture, plastic, and even used shipping crates into new and interesting design objects.

In his most recent project he teamed up with Chicago auction house Wright for a fascinating performance-design spectacle over four days, creating on site and in view of the public a series of unique design pieces, mostly chairs, using cast-off shipping materials, crates, discarded furniture and objects from around the Wright warehouse.

Passers-by were able to meet, watch, and interact with the designer throughout the affair. The constraints of material and time served to strip the process bare and reveal the designer’s intrinsic skill, absent the polish and trickery of commercial manufacture. The results look a little like the design creations of Frankenstein’s cousin – whatever your taste, a definite talking point in any space.
