Compasso d'Oro awards, Turin

News

We’re no strangers to handing out accolades at Wallpaper*. Our Architects Directory this month recognizes the best new architecture outfits from across the globe and our January Design Awards sort the wheat from the chaff in everything from urban projects and hotels to fashion collections and perfume. Sometimes, though, it’s nice to be on the receiving end of things.

Wallpaper*Express, a collaborative design project with Bombardier and Migliore + Servetto Architetti Associati that debuted in Milan during Salone 2005, received a coveted nomination at the XXI Compasso d’Oro ADI Awards ceremony last month in Turin.

The prestigious event is held every three years and recognizes the very best in Italian-made industrial design over the preceding period. Past winners include Mario Bellini, Konstantin Grcic and Eero Aarnio, among select others.

The project itself was a massive room-sized installation conceptually exploring the multi-billion dollar Shanghai-Beijing high-speed railway project now underway – from the design of carriage exteriors and signage, to clothing, seating and rail aesthetics – proof positive that utilizing modern public transport needn’t mean compromising one’s design standards.

The concept will form part of the XXI Compasso d’Oro ADI exhibition, which runs until the end of August at the Venaria Reale, Turin.
