Architects Directory 2020: Fem, Netherlands
Set up in 2019 by Femke van de Voort, Fem Architects is a young, boutique office based in Amsterdam that caught our eye for its clever and sustainably minded residential work. Row House, in the city’s Klaprozenweg area, is one of the practice’s first built projects. The structure stands on the site of a former brick factory and the architect responded to this history by creating a fittingly utilitarian, robust, eco-friendly and affordable family home, featuring a façade clad in profiled Corten steel.

The wabi-sabi of Erika Nakagawa's ‘breakthrough project’ in Japan
Setting up her office in Toyko in 2014, Erika Nakagawa describes Momoyama House as her ‘breakthrough project’. The weekend retreat in the Shizuoka Prefecture features an unusually high, undulating concrete roof raised on concrete pillars that creates a flowing interior, which opens entirely towards the surrounding nature. Nakagawa has also been invited to exhibit work at the respected Toto Gallery Ma space for architecture in 2021, whose selection committee includes Tadao Ando.

Atelier Ordinaire design minimal wooden holiday home near Aix
Architect Thomas Walter set up his studio in 2014 and was joined by artist and costume designer Angèle Maillard in 2019, forming Atelier Ordinaire. Together, the team seeks to create designs rooted in craftsmanship and clever use of quality materials. Their manifesto declares their aim ‘to remain simple and sincere in every way’. Their house in the southern community of Venelles reflects this approach, made in immaculately produced joinery, clean forms and a delicately unassuming yet unmistakable modern form.

Red Concrete House in Lillehammer is bolder than its budget suggests
John Sanden and Ingvild Hodnekvam’s work perfectly represents that clean, nature-inspired, human-centric aesthetic that has come to characterise the best of Norway’s architecture – yet with a fresh, contemporary twist that gives it a competitive edge. The two architects jointly launched Sanden+Hodnekvam Arkitekter in 2014 and have since received commissions all over the country, including houses of all scales and sizes. Their material choices vary, spanning wood, brick and concrete, but it’s their latest house’s distinctive colour that gives it its name: Red Concrete House. The project, located in Lillehammer, is an intergenerational home – a typical family set up for the Nordic country. Here, three generations live under one roof in a minimalist house nestled into a slope.

Entitled Adaptation, the book explores the architect's journey from the foundation of his studio to the present day through a number of exquisite residential designs.

Kamara's studio, Atelier Masomi, was first featured in the 2019 Architect Directory.

Military hut transformed into chic Andermatt restaurant with ‘concealed tunnels'

The Wachtuus Mountain restaurant, set in the Andermatt area's mountains, is a transformed military hut with a concealed ‘entrance to a network of tunnels’ says its creator, London based architectural designer and Wallpaper* Architects Directory alumnus Jonathan Tuckey.

Architects Directory 2020: TW Ryan, USA
Thomas Ryan worked at well-known New York studios, including Richard Meier & Partners and Christoff Finio Architecture, before setting up shop on his own with TWRA in 2013. His striking, clean geometries have already won him the Deborah Norden Prize from The Architectural League of New York, and a Design Research Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. His portfolio spans residential and art-related commissions, including Three Chimney House, a family home in Virginia, inspired by the land it sits on. Ryan works between San Francisco and New York.

Place and space come together in Atelier Barda's Quebec home
Both graduates from the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Toulouse in France, Cécile Combelle and Antonio Di Bacco joined forces to set up Atelier Barda in Montreal in 2013. Their work spans all scales and typologies, from new-build architecture to furniture design (through their product division, Foraine), always rooted in a personal approach, intuitive design and rigorously researched solutions. Maison Gauthier in Canada’s Mont-Tremblant displays their minimalist aesthetic and attention to detail.

Malu de Miguel's Madrid villa is an exercise in Spanish modernism
Set up in Madrid only three years ago, Malu de Miguel’s practice may be young, but the dynamic Spanish architect is a master at creating well proportioned, tactile residences, using humble materials and plenty of natural light. Her portfolio includes a house in Menorca and a family home in Madrid suburb Boadilla del Monte. The latter combines brick, concrete, large openings, light wells and airy double height spaces in a modest home with a sense of spatial luxury that punches above its weight.

Architects Directory 2020: Naso, Mexico
José Ignacio Vargas Mier y Terán, who founded this young practice in 2018, brings together experience at Ricardo Legoretta, Tatiana Bilbao, Max von Werz, Carlos Zedillo and FRAMA Copenhagen, as well as studies in Mexico and the UK. The Mexican architect’s approach is multidisciplinary and research-based. His breakthrough project, Casa Martha, is a concrete and earth block structure in rural Mexico, created to replace an existing one on site, which was damaged by the country’s 2017 earthquake. Occupied by an elderly couple and their adult children, the house was conceived as an easy-to-access, simple building that allows for intergenerational living. The project was part of an initiative led by Mexican organisation ReConstruir México. As well as practicing, Vargas Mier y Terán also teaches at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City.

Textural limestone guest houses in Tanzania
Sam Barclay moved to Mumbai in 2006, working with Studio Mumbai before setting up Case Design with his wife Erica as a partner, in 2013. Now he has projects in India, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and has also launched Casegoods, a collection of furniture, lights and objects. ‘We aspire to create things that are simple, beautiful and functional,’ he says. The Kizikula Guest Houses in Zanzibar use the coral limestone of the island.

Architects Directory 2020: Cera Stribley Architects, Australia
Dom Cerantonio and Chris Stribley joined forces in 2014 to set up Cera Stribley, a boutique architecture studio in Melbourne that specialises in residential and commercial work. They consider Parkside House, a timber and brick holiday home, to be a key breakthrough project for them, while the sensitive renovation of an iconic McGlashan Everist beach house in Sorrento is among their latest completions.

In the space of the 13 years since their participation in the Architects Directory in 2007, Chinese architecture firm MAD, headed by Ma Yansong, has become an international powerhouse with projects ranging hugely, both in scale and geographical location. Here, we visit their latest, nature-inspired, mixed-used development Nanjing Zendai Himalayas Center.
