It was only a matter of time before the big hitters of the mobile world squared up to the iPhone. Apple's undeniably elegant device has rewritten the rules of interface design; no longer will we have to settle for clunky icons, slow access times and cluttered-up screens. At least, that's the idea.
In the real world the ongoing dominance of Windows Mobile devices means massive change will be slow to arrive, but with a host of touch-screen devices about to enter the fray in 2008, life is looking brighter for the average mobile user.
Of all the promised goods floating around the digital void, we're most excited about Sony Ericsson's forthcoming Xperia X1. At first sight it might look like the monolithic black slab we know so well, but there's a twist.
Slipped under the 3-inch screen is a good-sized keyboard, which supplements the expected touch-screen functionality. A high-resolution screen almost makes sense of movies on the go, although some might baulk at the Windows Mobile operating system. No matter - the teaser ads promise much, as is the nature of these things, and right now the X1 has the right lines and feature set to make it our most wanted.
