Following a makeover by Dubai's new Jumeirah owners, Manhattan’s landmark Essex House has emerged with renovated rooms, spa and now a chic new eatery.
Positioned with prime Central Park views, South Gate's ambitious design combines a bar, dining room, wine gallery (with room for 2,100 bottles), patisserie and breakfast nook - all elegantly envisioned by local architect Tony Chi.
Accessed via a 15-foot glass 'box' studded in palladium leaves, Chi has clad South Gate’s tables in leather, the floors in red travertine and white oak and the walls in hundreds of pieces of handmade fractured mirror glass.
Chef Kerry Heffernan comes to South Gate from celebrated Manhattan kitchens such as Montrachet and Bouley. Now in his new Central Park South home, he is giving new life to American classics, enticingly pairing foie gras with pear wafers and venison with rosemary fritters.
