Military hut transformed into chic Andermatt restaurant with ‘concealed tunnels'
The Wallpaper* Architects Directory has turned 20. Conceived in 2000 as our index of emerging architectural talent, this annual listing of promising practices, has, over the years, spanned styles and continents; yet always championing the best and most exciting young studios and showcasing inspiring work with an emphasis on the residential realm. To mark the occasion, this summer, we're looking back at some of our over-500 alumni, to catch up about life and work since their participation and exclusively launch some of their latest completions. The Wachtuus Mountain restaurant, set in the Andermatt area's mountains, is a transformed military hut with a concealed ‘entrance to a network of tunnels’ says its creator, London based architectural designer and Wallpaper* Architects Directory alumnus Jonathan Tuckey.

South Korean Architects Directory alumnus The System Lab has gone from strength to strength since its 2016 inclusion, with work expanding from private homes to masterplanning, housing and impressive commercial work. Here, we speak to founder Chanjoong Kim to explore the studio's evolution and latest work.

In the space of the 13 years since their participation in the Architects Directory in 2007, Chinese architecture firm MAD, headed by Ma Yansong, has become an international powerhouse with projects ranging hugely, both in scale and geographical location. Here, we visit their latest, nature-inspired, mixed-used development Nanjing Zendai Himalayas Center.

Ireland's Grafton Architects was featured in the magazine's first ever Architects Directory, in 2000, and has since grown exponentially in architectural output and influence, becoming, amongst other things, one of the world's go-to studios for inspiring education buildings. Here, we look at their School of Economics at Université Toulouse 1 Capitole in France.

Drawing on local climate, materials and vernacular, Niamey's new cultural centre by Mariam Kamara will be a valuable hub for the arts in the region, but also feel at one with its environment. Kamara's studio, Atelier Masomi, was first featured in the 2019 Architect Directory.

Award winning New Zealand architecture studio Fearon Hay, which featured in the 2001 Wallpaper* Architects Directory, has created Fabric Warehouse 2.0, an industrial building with bold, art installation-like features.
