This Brooklyn townhouse is a tranquil haven in the city
Hatchet NYC’s light-filled renovation makes for a restful family home
A Brooklyn townhouse draws on contemporary design codes in a joint project between design team Hatchet NYC and Leipzig-based interior and furniture designers Studio Oink. Tranquillity was the main brief for the home situated in Greenpoint, a busy Brooklyn neighbourhood, and belonging to a young family who craved a calm space in which to grow. Hatchet's in-house design team, Overhead, put an emphasis on light and space for a harmonious interior which has provided a bolthole from the urban surroundings.
Hatchet, which comprises an in-house design team, contractors and custom fabrication studio, worked with their specialised artisans on a design that prioritised flooding the space with natural light, with the addition of skylights and glass peepholes between rooms bringing a fluidity to the layout. A light-well ensures central spaces avoid feeling dark and cramped, while the top floor benefits from oversized windows. The double-height configuration of the living area reinforces this feeling of openness.
Bringing light and fluidity to a Brooklyn townhouse
The interconnected floorplan carries through to the kitchen’s glass doors, which lead to the landscaped yard, bringing light and airiness to the interior of this previously dark, wood-framed rowhouse. The new lightness extends to the materials inside, which are crafted in European white oak, with a thoughtfully designed, bespoke system of opening wood panels that means spaces can effortlessly be made public or private.
The design is complemented by the neutral tones of the furniture and materials selected by interior designer company Studio Oink, whose muted palettes epitomise elegant simplicity. The company unites the industrial design and interior architecture backgrounds of founders Lea Korzeczek and Matthias Hiller, who focus on bespoke concepts for both residential and commercial projects. Here, the studio’s thoughtful curation makes a chic foil for Hatchet NYC’s understated aesthetic in this extensive renovation of a historic Brooklyn townhouse.
