Heading south: Espasso opens a new showroom in Miami Ironside
Establishing a southern outpost is appealing on so many levels. This week, the Brazilian design showroom, Espasso, sets a prime example by opening a companion to its New York space in balmy Miami. Located within Miami Ironside – an enclave of design galleries and showrooms in the city’s historic West Belle Meade neighbourhood in the Upper Eastside – the gallery is tucked among a palatable mix of leafy eucalyptus trees, glass storefronts and outdoor paths.
Espasso’s new space spans 2,000 sq ft and brings its signature assortment of modern and contemporary Brazilian design to a Floridian clientele. In honour of its opening, the gallery has made pieces by Oscar Niemeyer, Zanini de Zanine, Carlos Motta and Jorge Zalszupin available in Miami for the first time. These include Niemeyer’s iconic, scroll-like ‘Marquesa’ bench, made from black lacquered wood and caning; Zanine’s ‘Longo’ bench, which is crafted from a single, reclaimed wood column; Zalszupin’s wooden origami-like coffee table; and Motta’s signature ‘Guará’ armchair that mixes leather upholstery with a structured wooden form.
‘Visitors from all over the world have made Miami a major destination for design, so it makes perfect sense to open an Espasso here,’ says founder Carlos Junqueira. ‘It is essential for Brazilian design to have a presence in Miami and Espasso is the perfect platform.’
In addition to a specially curated shop-in-shop dedicated to the work of Sergio Rodrigues, Espasso’s strong relationships with designers such as Claudia Moreira Salles, Isay Weinfeld and Arthur Casas also indicates the breadth of future design showcases to come.
