Celine cruises into Nice beachfront for S/S 2022
For the Celine S/S 2022 show, the Parisian maison took a picturesque pitstop at the Nice beachfront on the French Riviera, with a womenswear spectacle that celebrated the seaport city's architectural landmarks
Since the inception of Celine's filmic runway show videos, the French maison has road-tripped around its home country, making pit stops at motosport racing tracks and Renaissance châteaus, where models strutted against striped tarmac, stacks of tyres, majestic towers and spiral staircases. For the brand's S/S 2022 womenswear show, Celine's Hedi Slimane had something a little more sunkissed in mind, with the brand coasting luxuriantly across the French Riviera aboard a Celine-branded cruise ship and navigating towards the picturesque beachfront of Nice.
Here, models – sporting outfits including sequinned tracksuits, floral puffball gowns, metallic varsity jackets, baseball caps and androgynous denim – strode down the palm-tree populated Promenade Des Anglais, against a cloudless azure sky. This 7 kilometre stretch of seafront – one of the most renowned on the Mediterranean Coast – was constructed in the 18th century, and was a favoured holiday spot for the English aristocracy. Queen Victoria had a particular soft spot for the Hôtel Régina and Grand Hôtel.
Celine S/S 2022: Cruise into the Côte d'Azur
The Celine S/S 2022 show also hones in on the column-lined Belle Epoque façade of the Villa Masséna Musée, built between 1898 and 1901 by the Danish architect Hans-Georg Tersling. Its historic garden adjoins the Negresco, the famed 1912-built hotel, which has a curved pink dome that complements the sunset tones of the Nice skyline. For Celine S/S 2022, this was branded with the label's typography, and featured a model silhouetted from one of its top windows. Inside, the Negresco's Royal Lounge sparkles with a Baccarat chandelier, constructed from 16,390 crystals.
The film offers a sun-drenched, cinematic sweep of Nice, zooming in on facades, columns, domes and monuments, from the physiogomy of an Ancient Egypt-inspired statue to the panoramic view of the Côte d'Azur shoreline. Throughout the show, the city's astronomical observatory appears as an omnipresent observer, a building inaugurated in 1875, which sits at an altitude of 375 metres above sea level. The building was designed as a joint commission by architect Charles Garnier and famed engineer Gustav Eiffel, whose creative vision is integral to the topography of the French capital. So too, is Hedi Slimane's.
