'Slopestyle' might be the name of the newest category in this year's Winter Olympics, but it was also quite literally the focus of Tommy Hilfiger's Winter collection. The veteran designer looked to the technical sports of the great American outdoors for inspiration, although he did interpret things with a luxury lens. Blending sporting motifs, like puffer vests, fur-trimmed parkas and teddy fur jackets, with Western elements, including baggy workwear-inspired jeans, tiered prairie skirts with frayed edges and a general abundance of plaid, the collection was a youthful take on classic Americana. Hilfiger's trademark tartan prints appeared in a myriad of colourways on brushed cashmere, silk and mohair, which gave them a sense of freshness. Rugged, performance-driven details, such as bungee cords and speedlock hooks, also unexpectedly popped up to give clothing an urban feel. Styled with knitted bobble beanies, wooly socks and shearling-lined suede boots and clogs, the collection had an easy, thrown-together attitude that would thrive both in the city and in the mountains.
