So what tricks do the nimble hands of Fendi and the wild fantasy of Karl Lagerfeld have in store for us for next spring? The short answer is laser cuts and iris flowers. But the reality was much more dense and beautifully layered than that. Lagerfeld took Fendi's leather expertise and literally ripped it to shreds this season, slicing grill-like panels into the front of leather jackets, coats and sweatshirts. The cutting effect was carried over onto some terrific flat form footwear with uppers that looked like fishbones, and later morphed into sheer panelled skirts and perforated plastic layers that sat over cocktail dresses like a filmy bubble wrap. The glory is always in the details at a Fendi show and here Lagerfeld played with an iris flower, slicing it into 3D formations on leather jackets but also printing it onto Peekaboo bags and spicing it into long leather foliage that dangled from the models' hair like a feathered Indian princess headdress.
