The Wes Anderson-inspired Breadway Bakery brings American pop aesthetics to Ukraine
Breadway Bakery, Ukraine’s hottest new commodity, has all the hallmarks of a Wes Anderson film set, with the Instagram-worthy aesthetics to match.
Located in the heart of Odessa, the 85 sq m café was devised by Kiev-based interior designers Lera Brumina and architect Artem Trigubchak whose creative curiosity for the project was piqued by Fondazione Prada’s Bar Luce and, likewise, Wes Anderson’s 2014 comedy film The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Employing a contrasting yet complementing colour palette of bright blues and a slick of on-trend corals to play off American pop aesthetics, the space confidently mixes clashing tones and textures of perfect pastels. Colour was used to highlight different zones, with blue most notably marking the takeaway zone, while a muted grey area adds a contemporary touch to the café, where visitors, seated on pink velvet chairs, enjoy cups of steaming coffees and sweet croissants. Glossy tiles by Ceramica Bardelli adorn the walls; their height, beautifully accentuated by metal pipe chandeliers swinging above custom-made furniture dotted throughout the space.
The menu reads healthy and indulgent here, but focuses heavily on turning local produce into culinary delights – think fresh ham and cheese croissants for breakfast, hearty lunches like salmon, avocado and egg salads or tasty bacon, cheese and onion marmalade sandwiches when on-the-go. With plates of cream cakes and a playfully inviting interior, Breadway Bakery hits the sweet spot just right, one that is out to appeal to both food and design cognoscenti all over.
