Crowd-funded tea truck and Shoreditch shop Good & Proper Tea has recently opened a second, larger bar within which to champion its proper brews and crumpets – this time on the coffee hotspot of Farringdon's Leather Lane.

With an array of exceptional teas, company founder Emilie Holmes is on a mission to offer the same quality and variety that coffee drinkers are provided with across the city. By turning its back on low-grade black tea – that is crushed and torn to produce colour and strength quickly – in favour of ‘orthodox’ production methods in which leaves are handled with great care, Good & Proper Tea brews with love, keeping delicate flavours intact.

The teas on offer are sourced from farms all over the world. From black, oolong, green and white leaves, to herbals and frothy matcha lattes, each has been numbered according to the order in which they were discovered, tasted and added to the shop's collection. A full savoury crumpet menu has been conceived too, which is ideally paired with the selection of teas available; here, food and tea are carefully selected to be in perfect harmony with one another.

Good & Proper Tea’s in-house baker Helly worked with Benjamin Benton and Georgia Levy of The Kitchen Cooperative on recipe development. The team settled on buttermilk sourdough crumpets, available in classic, rye and gluten free varieties and topped with either lime curd, Marmite and cheese, or smoked salmon and cream cheese.

Featuring exposed bricks, parquet flooring and whitewashed walls, the interior (and graphics) were designed by Peckham-based architecture studio Kennedy Woods. The space is modern and youthful, successfully embodying Good & Proper Tea’s fresh, authentic spirit.
