A student-only campus hotel in Barcelona graduates with a first class in design

Adding a splash of colour to spaces both inside and out of Spain, award-winning creative consultancy Masquespacio is widely acclaimed for making a bold statement or two.
Part of the Valencia-based studio’s growing portfolio is their recent collaboration with Dutch hotel group The Student Hotel, which sees the redesign of the first of two student-only campus locations in the Marina and Poble Sec districts of Barcelona. With ten locations in nine European cities under their belt already and more opening soon, the latest student residence project is created for the co-living and co-working lifestyle.
The four-tiered 21,000 sq m structure is home to 500 rooms and an array of communal spaces, ranging from gaming areas to open and private lounges to an outdoor swimming pool, designed to encourage social interactions and stimulate learning without confining students to a single room.
Hints of postmodernism are mixed with local and bespoke touches throughout
The interior sets primary hues, potted plants and playful neon lighting against an industrial backdrop of exposed brick walls and concrete columns, accentuated by softer elements like draping, pink fabrics. Fittingly reflecting the city’s Mediterranean setting and referencing Spanish design institutions including Sancal, EstudiHac and Barcelona-based designer Isaac Piñeiro of Nadadora, most notably in its seating, hints of postmodernism are mixed with local and bespoke touches throughout, such as a custom-made bench designed by Masquespacio.
Blending these visual elements with The Student Hotel’s spirited lifestyle, the brazen Barcelona outlet provides a modern destination – both in ethos and looks – for an international student community who places value on social exchange – in real life.
