The highlights from Pitti Uomo 94 in Florence
Rain was omnipresent at Pitti Uomo 94. The outerwear brand Herno celebrated its 70th year with a vast exhibition that began with an installation of a single drop of rain; MCM showed ready-to-wear and accessories in Florence for the first time in a dynamic runway presentation that featured a tropical storm. The red and blue carpeted catwalk at Paul Surridge’s debut Roberto Cavalli Menswear show was absolutely sodden, which added an eccentric mood to the otherwise fine, fresh clothes. After all, what’s summer without the threat of a downpour? Elsewhere, the classic brands who have built their heritage on modish, Made in Italy élan are having conversations about what they can learn from the advance of streetwear: it’s time for a rethink they say.

House swap: a host of gifted movers and shakers is modernising fashion’s leading maisons
Young talent has been tasked with bringing oomph and impetus to some of the biggest brands in Paris, Milan and New York, on occasion turning them on their heads (as with Helmut Lang, where Hood By Air’s Shayne Oliver has been enlisted to reboot), or at least injecting them with a healthy dose of fresh creative energy. Luke and Lucie Meier, a married couple whose previous experience ranges from Dior to Supreme, have been signed up to recharge Jil Sander. And delivered. Same goes for Carven, whose new creative director Serge Ruffieux has shown a flair for beautifully made contemporary womenswear. Here, though, is our pick of the most notable new arrivals in A-list ateliers. Illustrator: Magda Antoniuk

Shape shifting: making moves with photographer Roos Quakernaat
Roos Quakernaat caught our eye at the latest Hyères Festival of Fashion and Photography. So we did the patronly thing and tasked her with artfully tangling new Dutch design and this season’s key looks, as she explains here in her own words. Fashion: Isabelle Kountoure. Writer: Elly Parsons. As originally featured in the January 2018 issue of Wallpaper* (W*226)
