Tierra Chiloé Adventure and Spa Hotel — Chiloé, Chile

Intrepid explorers of Chile’s wildly beautiful coastline rave about the Rilàn Peninsula, and the area’s scenic channels and fiords. The windswept Isla Grande de Chiloé comes in for special mention, a nugget of green hills, sleepy hamlets, wooden churches and endless horizons, in the middle of which is the Tierra Chiloé hotel.
Opened in 2012 with just 12 rooms, the hotel recently added a new wing, clad in wooden shingles and designed by the original architects Mobil Arquitectos as an elongated off-kilter oblong that floats over the bluff on a base of glass windows.
Interior designers Carolina Delpiano and Alexandra Edward – also behind the redesign of the rest of the hotel – have lined the 12 new rooms with lenga timber and natural materials, alongside handmade textiles and wood-carvings.
At hand is a boat in which to explore the surrounding islands, a spa bath of goats milk, a stable of horses for idle canters through the grassy fields, and an in-house restaurant serving smoked pork and views of Pullao Bay.
