Marram, Montauk — New York, USA

The town of Montauk, located at the tip of Long Island, may have once been considered a remote retreat where bohemian New Yorkers went to get away, but in recent years, this legacy has been mostly eclipsed by an overflow of hip nightlife from the Hamptons, which is particularly dominant during the summer months.

Thankfully, one of the town’s newest arrivals, a stylish 96-room hotel named Marram (for the indigenous wild grass that grows around the beachfront property) seeks to restore some of Montauk’s original intimacy. Situated directly on the Atlantic Ocean, just steps away from the Terrace surf break, the hotel’s easy elegance is a welcome reprieve.

Designed and owned by the hospitality firm Bridgeton, Marram touts the whole package with a heated outdoor pool, oceanfront rooms that boast sea views, courtyard rooms that overlook a well-planted courtyard, and a comprehensive program of activities to enjoy. All the rooms have outdoor balconies and a light, neutral palette that’s further enhanced with a bevvy of personalised touches. Exposed white oak beams complement hand-textured plaster walls, while handwoven rugs, furniture made from wood reclaimed from old houses and fishing boats add a cosy and inviting feel. Bathrooms have been designed to resemble outdoor showers, complete with exposed shower piping and mauve and grey marble countertops.

In addition to strolling along the hotel’s secluded pathways and hanging out at the café, Mostrador Marram, which serves Latin American fare, guests also have yoga, guided nature walks, sunrise meditation and even on-site surfing lessons, all available at their fingertips.
