A sense of colour
With its curvaceous, elegantly machined design and audaciously cinched waist, Arne Jacobsen’s ‘Series 7’ chair has been a lightweight, compact and neatly stackable mainstay of the contemporary home since its introduction back in 1955. Some 65 years later, with over five million expertly pressure-moulded, ant-legged models sold, its Danish manufacturers Fritz Hansen can make a reasonable claim for the ‘Series 7’ being the most recognised and most successful plywood chair in the global marketplace. Now, the world’s most voluptuous and familiar chair is available in a range of brand new colours.
Created by Fritz Hansen in collaboration with design curator Carla Sozzani, founder of renowned Milanese gallery 10 Corso Como, ‘A Sense of Colour’ is a new palette of 16 new colours and seven base options for Jacobsen’s ‘Series 7’, ‘Ant’ and ‘Grand Prix’ designs. ‘We began the colour selection on this project with Carla Sozzani at her studio, where we chose from a vast number of colours,’ explains Fritz Hansen’s head of design, Christian Andresen.
‘One of the primary goals was to create a collection united by a warm tone - a “red thread” so to speak, and this was achieved by every colour we chose having a splash of red’
With the ‘Series 7’ chair at the core of Fritz Hansen’s design DNA, the team developed the new colourway with care and reverence. Each element of this special palette was picked to work next to the other as a beautiful contrast and complement, while simultaneously flattering Jacobsen’s iconic designs with a subtle warmth and harmony. The spectrum’s Deep Clay and Light Beige tones, for example, can be used as neutrals to connect colours while creating calm and delicate ‘colour families’.
‘From the dark green and blue of shifting waves and sky, to the pinks and ochres of small seashells and a fading seashore in twilight, the palette came naturally as I explored the essence of daylight and its partner, night, to capture our shared colour harmonies,’ says Carla Sozzani. ‘Any interaction with light and the confrontation of light with darkness causes a deep emotion, and the magnet that draws these two elements together is colour.’
The new palette is also available for special projects, with made-to-order and customised options providing endless possibilities. Driven by a passion for beauty, quality and craftsmanship, the Fritz Hansen company was founded in Denmark in 1872, and has since collaborated with visionary designers and architects from around the world, including Cecilie Manz, Hans J Wegner, Piero Lissoni and Poul Kjærholm.
