Romantic motifs take a modern shape in Gucci's new jewellery collection
Geometrical design codes bring a modernity to romantic motifs in Gucci’s new ‘Link to Love’ collection, now also widely available at Beaverbrooks. The octagonal forms of the rings and bracelets are swathed in symbolism, their eight sides both nodding to associations of infinity and ensuring a seamless slotting together in a contemporary rethink of the classic stack.
The pieces themselves, in 18kt white, yellow or pink gold, play on a variety of finishes, from the unadorned sheen of minimalist metal to delicate embellishments. Bracelets cut clean whorls of gold, while rings are studded with precious gemstones in bold hues, sprinkled with a pavé of diamonds or striped with green tourmalines or dark red rubellites. Smooth loops give way to sharply defined ridges on some pieces. These are enhanced with teasing textural elements, while a variety of band widths, from 3 to 6mm, mean rings cut either slender or chunky silhouettes.
This graphic identity also runs throughout the fine necklaces, bracelets and earrings, which intersperse a simple bar pendant, with or without a sprinkle of diamonds, into elegant golden links. The bar, adorned only with the Gucci logo, makes a simple foil for the intricate knitting of the chain. In pendant earrings, the chain takes on a new form, itself becoming a decorative element which grazes the shoulder in a sensual riff off classic style.
Functionality is carefully considered throughout - the new ‘Lariat’ necklace eschews the traditional clasp in favour of an innovative sliding circle design. On bracelets, a clasp which closes onto the chain means pieces are adjustable to suit the preferred length of the wearer, for jewellery which infuses joyous Gucci design with a very grown-up sensibility.
