Stone love: Henge kitchens offer sculptural allure
An astute balance of functionality and aesthetics, the Henge kitchen is a concept of timeless design, where the ancient world meets the future, where matter is always at the core of the design process, and the kitchen is at the heart of the house.
Henge creative director and designer Massimo Castagna began the brand’s approach to kitchen conception with a thoughtful and carefully considered philosophy: the notion of family life and contemporary hospitality evolving around the kitchen. With lifestyles now increasingly informal and houses designed in the open plan format, Henge noticed the kitchen practically integrating into the wider home environment, moving into the living room to share its elegance, function and convivial theatre. Ergo, the Henge kitchen is the centre of the home from both a stylistic and communal point of view: the true protagonist of the house.
An informed and sophisticated selection of rare natural materials is what makes a Henge kitchen majestic, a product of uncompromising quality and high stylistic value. It’s a kitchen that can be mixed with a more traditional column system, with construction and finish qualities that are decidedly different from the classic modular cabinets.
With this in mind, Henge has created three different kitchen models, comprising bars and islands, with a design that, says Castagna, ‘is never shy or ostentatious’. ‘Ozone’ is a freestanding sculpture made from faceted stone, with oak thermowood, servo-drive automatic drawers, black E-Type leather lining and black, burnished steel internal partitions. The marble is crafted so the veins flow from the worktop to the sides of the piece. ‘Oneon’ features rounded stone or metal surfaces, providing great strength and impact, while ‘Oxygen’ is presented with a thick metal frontage, accented by original Henge finishes in titanium, pale gold, silver, and brass.
All three Henge designs can be customised – in terms of the stones, metals and sizes – and, acknowledging the kitchen’s newfound social mobility, combined with furniture and systems from the brand’s existing ranges created for the living room. Conceived as standout, high-end furniture pieces in themselves, these kitchens are designed to be front and centre of the domestic stage.
Henge: a model of refinement
Based in Milan, Italy, Henge is the story of a young company that turned the search for materials into its design trademark.
Following founder Paolo Tormena’s passions for materials, craftsmanship, precious finishes, extraordinary dimensions and combinations, the company collaborated with creative director Massimo Castagna to shape a vision that addresses unique aesthetic needs, creating the unmistakable Henge house style.
Over the years, the brand has strengthened its cooperation with the New York- and Toronto-based design consultancy Yabu Pushelberg and completed projects in partnership with the designer Ugo Cacciatori, and Dutch artist Maarten Baas, exhibiting work in its showrooms and flagship stores in capital cities all over the world. Henge has also exhibited installations in spectacular residential environments, including Hillside in Los Angeles, and Casa Clara and Palazzo Del Sol in Miami.
This sense of collaboration and adventure has given life to a series of unmistakable products that embrace the brand’s DNA. Henge’s design stands out as a model of contemporary refinement and elegance. All Henge creations, says Tormena, are destined to become protagonists, showing a strong personality and going beyond the fugacity of trends and fashion.
